It is 40 years since Alfredo Ferreyros founded Explorandes, a pioneering adventure tour operator in the Andes that has opened trekking routes in the Cordilleras del Sur such as Vilcabamba and Vilcanota, exploring sections of the Inca routes. Explorandes has led the exploration and development of trekking and canoeing, focusing its business management fundamentally on innovation and social responsibility. The company has led a process of Environmental Certification (ISO 14000), and Explorandes was the first tour operator to be awarded with this certification in the Americas. Today, Explorandes offers active programmes related to experiences in culture and nature in the Andes. It was recognised as the best Green Tour Operator in the World at the World Tourism Awards (WTA) three years running.
It has been a member of the boards of directors of several national tourism associations and has founded conservation NGOs, participating in developing the environmental management and preservation of natural resources from the private sector and with the State. It is now a member of the Board of Consultation of the Adventure Travel and Trade Association (ATTA), a global organisation that promotes responsible tourism, amongst other things.
